Annotation

The Theotokos of Tikhvin was one of the most revered relics in Rus. According to tradition, St Luke the Evangelist painted the first image during the Mother of God’s lifetime. As stated in a 1383 chronicle, the icon appeared in front of fishermen on Lake Ladoga near Tikhvin. Later, the icon was located at the Tikhvin Assumption Monastery and was considered a defender from the Swedes, protecting the northwestern lands of Russia. This copy of the icon, set in silver with precious stones, was given to the imperial couple as a part of celebrations of the 300th anniversary of the House of Romanov. On the back, there is a silver plate with the following inscription engraved on it: "Kostroma Ipatyev Monastery. The Royal Cradle of the August House of Romanov. 1613–1913."
