Annotation

The sash is an ancient element of Russian costume. It was necessary both for clothing worn in the home and in public. The sash, like the cross, was considered a symbol of its wearer belonging to the Christian faith and was a talisman. Sashes were given to family members, and they were a part of courtship and wedding ceremonies. Sashes were made from various materials: linen, wool, silk, metal thread. The ends of the sash were decorated especially elegantly, with tassels, fringe, pom poms, and twisted cords.
