Annotation

The hardships of the war (1941–1945) had a decisive influence on Pimenov''s work; the lyrical artist exchanged his cheerful colour palette of the 1930s for the grim palette of the difficult war days. He created numerous dramatic images of women that form a lyrical and emotional poem about the Russian woman. The painting Autumn Station tenderly transmits an episode of people returning home from evacuation to a peaceful life. The practically monochromatic colour palette and the accuracy of the details, such as the gray bundles, the bottle of milk in a rucksack and the wet platform only emphasise the height and the monumentalism of the female image, as if personifying the life-affirming power of the victorious people and the hope for a happy future.
