English Garden today

Annotation

Will be supported by the British Consulate-General in Saint-Petersburg

When we picture an English Garden we imagine classically structured spaces, large country houses, rolling lawns and an all-together rustic and romantic feeling. These images of arcadia epitomise gardens such as Sissinghurst Castle with its white garden and wild areas, Levens Hall characterized by irregular topiary and bold annual planting and Petworth House enrobed in a Capability Brown landscape. This tranquil picture is a snapshot of our garden history; the English Garden today is very different. Busy lives, smaller spaces and a smaller budget and the desire to expect an instant garden have morphed our gardens, rather like our interior design, into the unforgiving lines often seen in modern hotels.
I would like to produce a garden, an English garden for today. A space, which addresses modern lifestyle requirements and one, which also reflects the current trends for a return to a more natural planting style. There are elements of our historical gardens, which create a visual language that I would like to use in this interpretation. Buxus parterres, Taxus hedging, traditional plant species and materials all remodelled in to a modern English garden.
