Annotation

Of all the masters of her generation, Nadezhda Udaltsova was the most receptive to French Cubism. Several of the works that she painted around this time, however, are often hailed as typical examples of Russian Cubo-Futurism. One such work is Restaurant, with its distinctive fan-shaped composition, echoing the volumetric-spatial structures of Cubism. Fragments of text are introduced into the painting with the intention of evoking a series of sensations associated with the life, noise, pulse and constantly changing impressions of a large city. Such aspects of Restaurant are a clear tribute to Italian Futurism.
