Eruslan Lazarevich was the hero of an old Russian story that was already popular in 17th century manuscripts. The tale of the young and wonderful bogatyr tells the story of his many military and romantic adventures and was enjoyed by Old Russian readers due to the variety of its content and, when put into image form, was widespread among the people. One of the bogatyr’s exploits – his battle with a snake that had besieged the city and was devouring men – is depicted in this lubok.
