Annotation

This composition is based on an engraving by Simon Ushakov that he did in 1665 from a Western European original. A nude sinner, urged on by a demon, walks away from Heavenly Jerusalem into hellfire. He is burdened with baskets of animals that embody the Seven Deadly Sins: a peacock (pride), a goat (fornication), a snake (greed), a dog (envy), a frog (sloth), a lion (anger), and a bear (gluttony). During the process of copying the composition from one lubok to another, the animals lost their resemblance to the living originals and their number decreased. The subject was popular in folk engravings and drawn Old Believer luboks
