This formal dessert service of the Order of St Alexander Nevsky was for 60 people, and was used in the Winter Palace from 30 August 1779 for ceremonial receptions of holders of the Order. The Imperial Order of St Alexander Nevsky, which was originally conceived by Peter the Great, and founded by Catherine I on 21 May 1725, was an award for both military personnel and civilians. The Order’s church was the Trinity Cathedral in the Alexander Nevsky Monastery in St Petersburg, where the saint’s relics are preserved.
