Annotation

Interior paintwork is one of the main forms of decoration of the peasant residence. In contrast to architectural carving, it was found almost everywhere, especially in the Russian North. It flourished in the 19th and early 20th centuries. It was done by both local and travelling artists. A peasant izba’s paintwork decorations had a series of regional characteristics that consisted of a certain subjects and motifs. There were also techniques in the methods used and the location of the paintwork.
