In recent times, an increasing amount of attention has been paid to the ecology of our surrounding environment and, in that context, the topic of waste recycling and repurposing has found dramatic expression in our project.
The “Plantophrenia” project is actually a runway show of live model-installations wearing costumes fabricated using 90% recycled materials – yet, the models look so striking that the spectator remains unaware of this fact. All of the materials used undergo artistic processing whereby their “garbage” origin is masked.
The main element of the costumes is their voluminous millinery imitating various plants: fiddleheads, cacti, ceriman, and agave – as well as eco-constructions resembling solar batteries. The exquisite hats are paired with laconic sheath-dresses made of natural organic fabrics emblazoned with generic ethnic and floral print motifs. The models’ overall look is topped off with body- and face-art executed free-form, without excessive attention to precision detail, in full view of the gathered audience.
