The “Botanical Garden for the Vision Impaired” project is the first social project of its kind to be implemented in the country.
The aim of the project is to create a Russian-Finnish non-profit charitable foundation whose primary objective involves attracting funds for the acquisition of a 50-hectare plot of land located no farther than 50 km from St. Petersburg for the subsequent creation of an arboretum for promising newly-introduced species* to the country’s northwest.
Moving forward, the “Botanical Garden for the Vision Impaired” will become a part of the larger Arboretum.
The “Botanical Garden for the Vision Impaired” project is based on the tactile-contrast** variation among the plants used in the landscape composition.
The composition will be anchored by 4 pairs of different species, with each pair representing a single coniferous strain, plus another 4 plants – one for each species-representative of each of the other four strains of coniferous plants, making a total of 12 trees standing 1.5 – 2 meters tall.
Each tree is equipped with a plaque bearing the name of the plant in Russian and Latin, written in raised lettering and Braille, as well as a voice recording of its name in Russian, Latin and English.
Questions regarding financing for the future Foundation for creation of the Arboretum of promising newly-introduced species to the country’s northwest should be directed to Project Architect Vladimir Kedrov (vechuli@rambler.ru).
