Maryino Estate – a landmark of first quarter 19th century architecture and garden-park art – was founded in 1811 by S.V. Stroganova (1775–1845), born to Princess Golitsyna. The author of the original design was A. Voronikhin. Construction was completed in 1817 by his apprentice – the architect I. Kolodin.
The palace and park ensemble represents the harmonious existence of a stately palatial villa turned towards the sun.
Once the owners had departed the estate for good, it fell into disrepair. The historical changes ushered in by the 20th century dramatically altered Maryino’s fate, leaving a lasting and destructive impression on its appearance. For many long years, it was home to an orphanage, and later – a health and recreation resort of the Sokol factory.
In 2008, the estate became a private property once again, and is currently finding new life as a cultural-historical center: rooms for the accommodation of long-term guests – including full room and board – have been renovated; an exposition museum is being created in the ceremonial areas of the palace; interactive tours are led around the palace, park and surrounding environs; a collection of historical costumes of the 19th century is being gathered; musical evenings are held; the estate way of life is actively propagandized.
In 5 short years, landscaping work has wrapped up on clearing the park, whose total area spans some 15 hectares; the cascade of ponds – complete with dykes and waterfalls – has been rebuilt; the stone bridge erected in 1817 according to a design by I. Kolodin has been restored; across the ponds and Tosna River, running through estate grounds, four bridges lost in the 20th century have been spanned; the grotto and granite bench have been reconstructed in their historical locations; the lion figures have been restored.
In 2011, the estate celebrated its 200th anniversary. In honor of the occasion, a column was installed in the park. Today, the path network is being restored, and an arbor has been installed for the registration of newlyweds. Work has commenced on restoring the grounds of the Old Park; work is underway on restoration of the estate’s original landscape: new ponds have been dug beyond the Tosna and in the Old Park, and work is progressing on moving the highway dividing the park in two back to its historical location; at Cape Grange, a rotunda has been erected to the heroes of the war of 1812 – the owners of the estate; at the cape where the Tosna flows from the Pyalya, a Chinese gazebo has been erected, a bridge over the Pyalya has been constructed, and much more.
