The National Association for the Revival of Historic Gardens and Parks was founded in 2012. State Artistic architectural palace and park museum preserve Tsarskoe Selo; SMP Pavlovsk; The Russian Museum; The National Pushkin Museum; The Kirov Memorial Culture and Recreation Park (St. Petersburg); The Moscow State Integrated Museum Reserve “Kolomenskoye, Lefortovo, Izmailovo, Liublino” (Moscow); State Memorial and Nature Preserve: The Tolstoy Estate-Museum “Yasnaya Polyana;” The Pushkin Preserve; and the National Foundation for the Revival of Russian Estates.
The primary goal of Association activities is to consolidate efforts aimed at the preservation, restoration and popularization of works of Russian garden-park art and landscape architecture.
As originally conceived of by its founders, the Association should emerge as an open platform for a discussion among members of the professional community and other stakeholders of the most pressing and common challenges facing the preservation and use of historic parks, and as a venue for academic discussions, meetings and exchanges of professional experience.
Moreover, plans call for the consultation of Association members and the representatives of other historic parks on various aspects of professional pursuits, while lending them informational and methodological support, including with respect to the development of methods for restoration and renovation work.
Association activities are outlined on the website www.historicgardens.ru. The site is open to everyone interested in garden-park art. Related materials for publication and discussion may be forwarded to higardens@mail.ru.
Association member meetings are held at least twice a year: in the first half of the year – in the form of a working meeting (seminar, roundtable), and in the second half – in the form of a conference.
The First International Workshop Conference of the National Association for the Revival of Historic Gardens and Parks was held in October 2012 at The Tolstoy Estate-Museum “Yasnaya Polyana.” The conference featured the participation of Association representatives and partners, as well as the Vice President of the French Heritage Society, Princess Marie-Sol de la Tour d’Auvergne. Within the scope of conference work, presentations were given by participating organizations. Invited specialists in the field of garden-park and landscape construction presented papers devoted to issues of park and garden maintenance, garden restoration, and floral composition, while master classes were also held and new publications were showcased.
In April 2013, Association participants took a tour of the historic gardens of Estonia, and in September 2013, The Kirov Memorial Culture and Recreation Park in St. Petersburg hosted the Second Workshop Conference, entitled: “Historic Parks: The Socio-Cultural Aspect.” Detailed information on these and other events is available on the Association website.
