About the Garden About the Garden Vera Viglina

Annotation

Landscape sculptures are born to live free – outside. They interact with the grass, trees and sky. I strive to make my sculptures part of the surrounding landscape – just as vibrant and bursting from the ground as trees, just as simple and calm as stones.
Many of my works are dedicated to woman. Woman-benefactress, woman-protector carries and defends new life. I want to express the tenderness and strength of woman in my works.
In and of itself, clay is a highly positive and feminine type of material – firing clay sculptures is much like preparing food over flame.
Each and every sculpture encompasses a multitude of metaphors and images that transform and shift from one to the other. Growing from the ground are flower-birds – they spread their wings and reach for the sky, existing somewhere between these two elements. Caterpillars are both sculptures and vases.
I fashion my sculptures as they once molded clay vessels long before the invention of the potter’s wheel. The walls of the sculpture proceed from the bottom up: it develops and grows as a living thing.
Birds-Flowers

Birds: movement in space.
Flowers: development in time.
Every living thing reaches for the sky, the light.
Form and name are ephemeral.
The key is movement upward.

Caterpillar parade

For them, everything is still ahead, everything is still to come.
Strong, brave, energetic. Daring destroyers and, and the same time, co-creators of a new form of being. A caterpillar is a mysterious creature, hiding a future butterfly inside itself. It will have to go through complex metamorphoses before rising into the sky. Every time it seems to die in order to be reborn in a new form.

The horn of plenty

The woman is a benefactor, bringing happiness and plenty to the world. The woman is the guide of the divine stream of life. The world around is full of generous plenty; look, listen, feel and delight!

Worshipping sprouts

On her knees, the woman gazes at sprouts, fragile but full of lively strength. They stretch from the earth toward the sun. What strength can be found in a tiny seed, great and inexplicable! One cannot understand it, one can only serve it and worship it. Spring comes to take the place of a long winter, awakening the life that sleeps in seeds. What could be more surprising than the strength of these small sprouts and the miracle of rebirth…
