Museum of Avant-garde of Saint-Petersburg is located in the reconstructed wooden house dating back to the middle of the XIXth century on the street of Professor Popov earlier known as pesochnaya.

In 1912 this house, flat #12, was inhabited by the founders of organic movement in Russian avant-garde – artist and musician Mikhail Vasilievitch Matiushin (1861–1934) together with his wife who was also an artist and a poet Elena Genrihovna Guro (1877–1913). For several decades house on Pesochnaya remained as one of the focus points in the cultural life of Saint-Petersburg-Petrograd-Leningrad where painters, musicians and writers were united.

In 1910–1920 the flat of M. Matiushin was often visited by K. Malevitch, P. Filonov, A. Kruchenikh, V. Mayakovski, V. Khebnikov, V. Kamenski, brotheres Burluyk. This place is also connected to key events in the history of Russian avant-garde such as the fisrt publication of the manifests and albums of Russian Futurist writers and artists, the creation of “Victory of the sun” opera.

The exposition of the museum displays the art works of M. Matiushin and private belongings of M. Matiushin and E. Guro from the collection of the State museum of the History of Saint-Petersburg. The display shows a universal character of the artistic activities of M. Matisuhin, it holds documents in relation to the colour system, to the theory of “broadened viewing/seeing” and his teaching practice. The heritage of M. Matiushin on the display in the museum is included in the general course of history of avant-garde movement in Saint-Petersburg. Regular temporary exhibitions of the museum are dedicated to the detailed story of separate aspects from the history of avant-garde and its connection to the contemporary times.
